Local
History
For more than a century and a half, southwestern Auglaize
County has been an excellent place to call home. During the 1830s
the first German immigrants began to build their new towns at Minster
(1832), New Bremen (1832), and New Knoxville (1836).
Within
a generation they had turned a wilderness into successful farming
communities. In 1848 the completion of the Miami-Erie Canal between
Cincinnati and Toledo brought prosperity to the region. Surplus
grain and hogs were shipped out on the canal and manufactured
goods came in to the communities.
By
the end of the 19th century a number of local industries
were thriving in the area. There were flour mills, breweries,
tanneries,
tile kilns, and pork packers. Local plants were making barrels,
furniture, farm plows, and machine presses. Today their industrial
roots have grown into dozens of companies with reputations for
quality
known around the world.
